General
Q: Why do I keep seeing a message saying a page is under beta testing?
A: Widgie World is very much a project under construction. A lot of scripts still need refining and changes are constantly being made to improve the site. Therefore, we need to make sure everything is tested and works before we put it open to the public. The three stages are:
Alpha Testing - this is when pages are being developed and only the coder can access them.
Beta Testing - this is when pages are available to Beta Testers, who are responsible for reporting errors to the coder.
Public - this is when the pages are totally finished and added to the site.
WW is currently in the beta testing stage. There are 200 available Beta Tester accounts.
Q: How do I become a Beta Tester?
A: To become a Beta Tester for the site, simply sign up. If the 200 available Beta Tester accounts have been filled, contact MarbleKittyKat, who can grant you Beta Tester status. This means you need to put time into checking pages for errors and reporting them. However, you must also understand that bugs in the unfinished scripts may result in loss of information on your account, and it is therefore recommended that you have a secondary account for Beta Testing.
Q: Why is the WW clock wrong?
A: The time displayed on the Widgie World clock is GMT. It also accounts for Daylight Saving Time. We would like it to account for British Summer Time but sadly PHP doesn't make it simple because it only uses American DST and not BST. Therefore, for a few days a year, the WW clock maybe an hour out of London time.
Q: I want to help with Widgie World! What can I do?
A: E-mail MKK. Widgie World is a big project and we're always grateful to have a helping hand. Whether you're an artist, programmer, writer or just an ideas person, get in touch.
Donations are also appreciated, as they help towards server and domain costs.
Q: Does Widgie World make money/pay its staff?
A: Widgie World does not officially have any income. It got to where it is today thanks to a lot of hard work from its volunteers.
We do sometimes commission artists and designers, who are paid with money that MKK makes from selling Flash games at TeaIsTheAnswer.com.
Rules
Q: I have seen another user misbehaving on Widgie World. What should I do?
A: Report the incident via e-mail to the staff and we will do our best to sort it out. They may be warned, banned from certain features or banned from the site.
Q: I have been unfairly banned!! How do I get the ban revoked?
A: Whilst you have to respect the decision of the Widgie World admin, if you genuinely feel you have been unfairly treated send us an e-mail to plead your case.
Q: What are the Widgie World rules?
A: For details of the site rules, please go here.
Starting Out
Q: What are Bits and how do I get them?
A: Bits are the currency in Widgie World. You can use them to buy widgies, items and land. To get them, you can sell widgies, items or land, or you can play the games in the arcade. For more information, check out the Starter Guide in the library.
Q: What is a widgie and how do I get one?
A: A widgie is a creature that you can buy, sell, train and set to do jobs on your land or in the workshop. You can buy them from the game shop or the widgie market.
Q: What is a guide and how do I get one?
A: Your guide is your personal representative within the world of Widgies, and
you need to get one before you do anything else.
You can get a guide by following the "Guide" link on the left (under the "Account" sub-heading). You can select your guide from a variety of species and use the Flash application to edit its appearance. You then choose a name, gender and motto for your guide. You only get to create your guide once. It will then be with you forever, looking after your shop and helping you out around the site.
There are a lot of cool things in store for your guide, so keep an eye on the news page for brand new features!
Technical
Q: Why doesn't Flash show up or work properly in my browser?
A: If you are using Internet Explorer, make sure you have the latest version of Flash Player installed. This can be found on the Macromedia website.
If you are using Firefox v2.0 or higher, there are currently compatibility issues between Firefox and Flash player. Until these are resolved by the developers, go to Preferences and tick the "No Flash" box.
Q: I've found a technical glitch. What do I do?
A: Try the Contact Us page :)
We appreciate your feedback!
Q: Why shouldn't I use Internet Explorer 6 to view Widgie World?
A: Whilst we respect your right to browse the internet using whatever means suits your fancy...please don't use IE 6! There are many things that won't work or won't look right if you use IE 6 - and we really can't help you unless you upgrade or change browser.
You can download IE 7 or Firefox or even Safari, all for free.
Widgies
Q: Why do I get the message "No Widgies Available"?
A: Anywhere you are setting an activity for your widgies, you might see this message.
This is because there are certain conditions your widgies must fulfill before they can go off to do tasks.
Hunger: make sure your widgie is not hungry by buying food and feeding it.
Happiness: your widgies may become unhappy if they have been working a lot. You can buy a toy and play with it, or take it to the Health Spa for some relaxation therapy.
Status: if your widgie is busy doing something else, including nursing or being up for sale, then it won't be able to participate in another activity. Check that its status on the widgie viewing page says "bored".
Health: a widgie can not work if has an ailment of any kind. If its status says "sick", check the Medical Journal and visit the Pharmacy to cure it (you could also take it for a visit to the Health Spa).
Age: widgies are unable to work before they reach adolescence, or after they retire.
Q: How do widgies age?
A: The age of a widgie is based on the number of days since it was born.
They go through five stages of life, and once they retire at 160 days old, you have the option to send them to a retirement home.
For more details on the ages, please check out this book.
